GARDENS
Small balcony garden ideas for Lahore homes
You don't need a lawn to have a garden. A few pots, the right plants and a little shade can turn a balcony into your favourite corner.

A balcony can be the calmest spot in the house. It just needs a bit of planning. Here is how we would start.
1. Watch your light for a day
Before you buy anything, notice how many hours of direct sun your balcony gets. Flowering plants usually want plenty of sun. Leafy greens are the opposite: in hot sun they wilt, so they do better in partial shade. Matching the plant to the light saves you a lot of heartbreak.
Grow up, not out.
2. Grow up, not out
On a small balcony, walls and railings are your best friends. Fix a trellis and let climbers do the work. Bougainvillea and jasmine add colour and shade. If you like growing food, climbing beans, cucumbers, lauki and karela will happily climb a trellis too.
3. Keep a few herbs by the door
Basil, coriander and chives grow well in pots and you will actually use them. There is something lovely about picking fresh dhania for dinner.
4. Plan for the seasons
In Lahore, the best time to sow winter flower seeds is the last week of September and the start of October. If you missed it, don't worry. For quick winter colour, pick up potted plants that already have buds, like marigold, chrysanthemum, gazania and aster.
5. Start with good soil
A simple mix of roughly 70% soil and 30% compost or well rotted manure works well for starting seeds. If the soil holds too much water, mix in some river sand, but never sea sand.
6. Protect it in summer
When the heat peaks, a green shade net or chik keeps the strongest sun off. Fix it firmly and leave room for air to move.
7. Add the handmade touches
This is where a balcony starts to feel like yours. A hand painted terracotta pot, a jute mat underfoot or a clay candle holder for the evenings. Small things, but they change how the whole space feels.
